Building Raised Beds
A 4×8 ft cedar or untreated-pine frame, 10 inches deep, is the standard first raised bed. Screw corners with 3-inch exterior screws; line with cardboard to smother grass; fill with 60% topsoil and 40% compost. Cost: $40–80 in lumber, $30–60 in soil. Build in fall so soil settles before spring planting.
